West Hills Village celebrates Veterans Day

Sunday was Veterans Day, but many locals are still observing the Armistice on Tuesday including residents at a retirement facility.

West Hills Village hosted a Veteran's Day program to honor their residents who served in the military.

People joined in song, prayer, and speeches to show their appreciation.

More than 32,000 South Dakotans served in the World War One.

Don Holliday served in the U.S. Army for 32 years including the Korean War.

Don Holliday says, "What I think of the most is those comrades who didn't come home and who made the sacrifice so that we can have the freedoms that we enjoy today."

Don Range served in the Navy during World War Two.

He says he was lucky to come home with his life, but it came at the cost of his education.

Don Range says, "It cost me two and a half years that I could have been going to the School of Mines, having to postpone my college education."

There are also 90 banners flying high in downtown Rapid City honoring veterans from various wars thanks to the Veterans Honor Banner Project.
