Chris Welty
Chris Welty joined FOX 8 in October 2023.
New Orleans-born and Lafayette-raised, Chris graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2012. During his junior year, Chris was awarded the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters Scholarship. He graduated from UL with a bachelor's degree in mass communications with a focus on broadcasting and a minor in political science.
During his freshman year of college, Chris landed his first TV job as a weekend videographer and associate producer at KLFY. In 2010, Chris joined KATC as the weekend editor, web producer, and videographer. Within six months, Chris transitioned from behind the scenes to a multimedia journalist. In 2013, he moved from the news industry to become UL Lafayette's multimedia specialist. Chris championed multimedia storytelling to build the University's reputation locally, nationally, and internationally. In March 2016, Chris joined KADN/KLAF as weekend anchor and reporter. In less than a year, Chris was promoted to news director of the FOX and NBC affiliate. In February 2018, he returned to KATC. Chris moved back to New Orleans in November 2020 to join WGNO News.
Among Chris' notable newsroom experience is his coverage of multiple major hurricanes, including Hurricanes Laura, Delta and Ida, the Alton Sterling shooting and the resulting civil unrest in Baton Rouge, the deadly 2016 ambush of Baton Rouge law enforcement, and the Seacor Power disaster.
Outside of work, Chris enjoys good times with his wife Taylor, his daughter Charlotte, and his golden retriever Luna.
