PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV/Gray News) – A 9-year-old boy was struck and killed while he was walking across a highway in Colorado early Monday morning.

According to Colorado State Patrol, the child was hit by a semitruck while crossing Highway 50 just east of Baxter Road. The deadly crash was reported at 5:27 a.m.

Troopers said the boy was walking on the shoulder of Highway 50 and then attempted to cross the roadway.

Troopers said the semitruck was driving in the right lane when the boy ran into the road and was hit by the truck. He died at the scene.

Officials are still investigating the circumstances of the death and have not said why the 9-year-old was attempting to cross the highway alone.

Troopers did say, however, that they discovered the boy came from the Oakwood Estates Mobile Home Park nearby.

The truck driver, who is from the area, remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, troopers said. No charges have been filed against him.

The child’s name has not yet been publicly released as of Tuesday morning.
