Toddler dies after ingesting something from a backpack, authorities say

DEARBORN COUNTY, Ind. (WXIX/Gray News) - Authorities in Indiana say they are investigating the death of an 18-month-old.

Azana Trentman died on Sept. 8, according to Dearborn County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the child’s parents called 911 on Sept. 4, saying she was unresponsive, and they were rushing her to the hospital.

According to the sheriff’s office, Azana’s parents said she became unresponsive after ingesting an unknown substance.

The grandparents of the 18-month-old said Azana found the unknown substance in a backpack at a store.

Her parents wrote on Facebook that Azana went to multiple hospitals and underwent several scans and tests, but her condition didn’t improve.

The Dearborn County Sheriff’s Office said Azana’s cause of death is still under investigation as they await the autopsy results.

While her family waits for answers, they said the 18-month-old has already helped save lives.

“It’s a miracle that three young lives were also affected by this because they were the recipients of little Azana’s organs,” the family said.

In a statement from Azana’s grandparents, they described her as a loving girl who loved animals, Cinderella, eating and dancing. They said she will be greatly missed, but they take comfort in knowing she saved three lives.
