NORTH BERWICK, Maine (Gray News) – A family in Maine is in mourning after a 4-year-old girl was hit and killed by an SUV at a day care Thursday.

According to the North Berwick Police Department, first responders were dispatched to the day care’s location on Buffum Road around 4:45 p.m.

When officials arrived, they said CPR had already been started on the 4-year-old. Life-saving measures were continued while the child was rushed to the hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Investigators said the girl had been standing next to her father’s pickup truck in the driveway of the day care when another parent driving an SUV began to park next to the truck.

As the driver pulled into the parking spot, the girl stepped into the path of the SUV and was struck by the vehicle.

Officials said they do not believe the driver of the SUV was under the influence, and no motor vehicle laws appeared to be in violation.

Authorities did not say whether there would be any charges involved.
