EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE/Gray News) - A mother of four was killed last week in Indiana while trying to get her car out of a ditch.

The crash happened on Martin Avenue in Evansville on Aug. 27.

Authorities identified the person killed that evening as 28-year-old Kelzie Mae Canary.

Police said they responded to a single-vehicle crash at about 10 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found Canary injured. She was taken to an area hospital but later died.

Loved ones said her children were her everything.

“They were her entire world,” Danielle Canary, Kelzie Canary’s cousin, said. “There isn’t anything she wouldn’t do for them or her family.”

Kelzie Canary was a single mother of four kids, including a 6-month-old.

“She just had her first baby girl. She was so excited to have a daughter and be a girl mom,” Danielle Canary said.

The Canary family said it’s been over a week since the crash but they are still in shock that she is gone.

“She was incredible. She was a role model for me. I looked up to her my whole life,” Danielle Canary said. “None of us saw this coming.”

A benefit dinner is being held Saturday to raise money to lay the 28-year-old to rest.

Family members have also set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses.

Police did not release any further immediate details regarding the crash.
