LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE/Gray News) - The Louisville Zoo is celebrating the first giraffe calf born at its zoo in 12 years.

The male Masai giraffe was born to parents Kianga and Baridi on Friday.

The giraffe calf weighed 160 pounds and was 6 feet 2 inches tall at birth.

The zoo said Kianga’s pregnancy was a planned part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan for Masai giraffes.

“We are delighted to celebrate this important birth,” Louisville Zoo Director Dan Maloney said. “Both Kianga and the calf are doing well, and the Zoo staff is closely monitoring them to ensure their continued health and well-being.”

The last giraffe calf, named Silvester, was born in 2012.

The Louisville Zoo just welcomed a Sumatran tiger cub for the first time in 20 years.
