Warehouse worker missing after microburst collapses roof
PHOENIX (KPHO/Gray News) — A search and rescue operation has turned into a recovery mission as crews search for a missing employee after a warehouse’s roof collapsed during a monsoon storm Wednesday night.
Phoenix fire crews were called to a commercial building in an industrial area near Van Buren Street and 47th Avenue shortly after 9 p.m. after the roof reportedly caved in during the storm. It’s unclear if the employee was still in the building when the roof collapsed.
Phoenix Fire Capt. Todd Keller said the remaining portions of the building were at risk of collapse, making it difficult for rescue crews to enter.
Rescue crews ended up using dogs and drones to help find the missing worker, but as of Thursday morning, Phoenix Fire said the recovery will need more manpower with the help of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and cranes
The National Weather Service confirmed a microburst hit the area with winds up to 77 mph at the time of the collapse.
