Rescue crews recover father’s body from lake after he saved his child from drowning

BRAXTON COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ/Gray News) - Rescue crews in West Virginia have recovered the body of a man who went missing in Sutton Lake on Monday.

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources said its police dive team recovered the body of 25-year-old Kevaughn Jamar Montgomery on Tuesday night near the Wolf Run area of Sutton Lake.

Authorities said Montgomery was boating at the lake with family and friends when his young son slipped into the water.

The child’s floatation device became loose, causing the boy to struggle.

Montgomery jumped into the lake to rescue his son, pushing the child to safety before tragically slipping beneath the water’s surface himself.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Mr. Montgomery during this difficult time. His heroic actions to save his son are a testament to his courage and love,” WVDNR Police Chief Bobby Cales said.

Montgomery’s body was discovered in a section of the lake that was about 12 feet deep.

Rescue crews said they were dealing with low visibility at the lake when searching for the father.

Crews continued their work until Montgomery’s body was located.

“This tragedy underscores the importance of using life jackets and taking all necessary precautions on the water to ensure the safety of our loved ones while enjoying our beautiful waterways,” Cales said.
