RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Falling shingles and crooked porches may not just be a sign of a bad contractor, but also of ones who scammed someone out of their funds.

When hiring a contractor for home improvement projects, researching those you may be hiring is important.

Looking at how long the company has been in business may be the first sign to look for in a contractor. Many will try to appear local, and ingrained in the area, even though the contractor may have just started their company a few days ago.

“Picking a good contractor is like picking a good doctor,” Chad Enger, CEO of Black Hills Exteriors, said. “You’re going to want to ask for referrals and you’re gonna want to know that this contractor has done very good work in and around the area for years.”

Checking a contractor’s reviews, asking them for their contractor’s license and getting referrals from previous customers can help ensure payment will go to contractors looking to improve homes, not those who could take the money run.
