RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - This week we have a patriotic theme, just in time for Independence Day, a Stars and Stripes Martini.

This is a good themed drink if you are hosting a patriotic party next Thursday. The most challenging aspect of the Stars and Stripes Martini is layering the liquids. You should practice before making this drink, or any layered drink, for guests. If you watch the video, you can see I didn’t practice, nor did I shake the coconut milk. So it was kind of a mess in presentation.

A warning here: Don’t be disappointed if some of your guests decline the drink. You can spend too much time laboring over a specialty drink only to find that your guests would rather just have a beer.

Always make sure you have other drinks to offer. This includes non-alcoholic beverages or mocktails. And please, do not overindulge on the Fourth. The summer season (with three holidays - Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day) is the most dangerous time for drunk driving.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz grenadine
  • 1 oz coconut milk
  • 1 oz blue curaçao liqueur
  • 1 oz white rum
  • Blueberry skewer (optional)

Directions: Pour the grenadine into a chilled martini glass. Carefully layer the coconut milk on top of the grenadine by pouring it over the back of a spoon. Next, gently layer the blue curaçao liqueur over the coconut milk using the same technique. Lastly, layer the white rum on top of the blue curaçao liqueur. Garnish the drink with a blueberry skewer or a small American flag.

Serve the Stars and Stripes Martini immediately. Your guests then give it a gentle stir to mix before sipping.
