April sales tax revenue up by almost 6% in Rapid City
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Rapid City released its April 2024 sales tax report and found that sales tax revenue is up 5.92%, which is $190,000 more than April 2023.
The sales tax revenue was expected to go up due to inflation but Rapid City Finance director Daniel Ainslie said that the increase is because people are buying more stuff. He also said that this year is breaking 2023 highs.
“Consumers are not only purchasing the same amount of goods as they did last year but they’re actually purchasing more goods. and now some of that’s because [of] tourism. That tourism so far has been higher and also just a growing population in the region but overall we have been increasing and selling more products and services than what we did last year,” Ainslie said.
Ainslie said that Rapid City is slightly under the amount needed for the city budget but he anticipates tourist season to fill in the gaps since tourism sales tax is already up by 0.6%.
