WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - When Americans need help, they depend on EMTs, firefighters and police. But who do the nation’s first responders reach out to when they’re in crisis? Data from the National Institutes of Health and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration suggests roughly 30% of first responders experience depression, post traumatic stress disorder, and/or other behavioral health conditions. That’s compared to 20% of the general population. Peter Zampa speaks with an EMT about his search for support. Peter also visited an organization working to give first responders a safe space to process their feelings.
