RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN)—We have had a decent and tranquil Father’s Day with sunny conditions, but clouds will develop overnight.

We have a warm front working its way into the area with some higher levels of instability in the upper levels of the atmosphere. Our frontal boundary should be the focus for storms to develop late tonight and into the early morning hours tomorrow.

Initially, expect the storms to focus more on our southeastern sections, such as those close to Bennett County. As the night wears on into the wee morning hours, more of the area becomes involved. Given the atmosphere and storm structure, large hail is expected to be the dominant threat from these strong to severe thunderstorms, as the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has outlined a good portion of our area under a level 2 out of five slight risk.

Expect a brief respite tomorrow from storms, yet we will still see some slightly breezy conditions under cloudy skies. Another wave of storms with a low-pressure system moving into the area overnight could have some isolated, more robust weather with that, but it’s better timing as it’s not interrupting a lot of us and our sleep! Thankfully, this should be the last of the storms until Thursday, with temperature stabilizing into the lower 70s. It is still below the seasonal average, but the conditions are pleasant as the sky turns primarily clear/sunny Tuesday into Wednesday.

We make our way towards the ‘80s for our weekend with the risk renewing for some storms, potentially stronger ones, as they are to develop in increased instability and with more upper-level impulses riding the high-pressure ridge that helps to warm us up.
