RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - A large wildfire is ongoing in northeastern Wyoming, impacting rural areas in the Bear Lodge Mountains. After igniting Tuesday, the fire has continued to spread, reaching its peak size Friday.

Dubbed the “Creek Fire,” the blaze encompasses an estimated 1,448 acres of woodlands.

Currently, the Creek Fire is impacting areas west of Government Canyon Road and south of Little Missouri River Road.

Wildland fire crews have been hard at work mitigating the situation, and their efforts appear to be paying off. The Creek Fire is not currently exhibiting the intense flames it did earlier in the week.

As of Friday, the fire was mostly smoldering and smokey. A change in wind direction pushed the blaze back onto already-burned land where less fuel was available.

Nevertheless, people in Crook County should continue to pay attention to messages from emergency personnel as fires like this can quickly intensify.
