RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Celebrating 50 years of pre-historic wonder at the Mammoth site at Hot Springs will come with a mammoth-sized two-day party commemorating half a century of discovery and preservation.

As The Mammoth Site marks its 50th anniversary, it’s not just a celebration of the past but a testament to the ongoing journey of discovery, says Claire Scarborough, a 50th-anniversary event coordinator. Scarborough says what was once a potential housing development is now a world-renowned paleontological dig site and museum. The Mammoth Site was discovered in June 1974, when the discovery of a mammoth tusk stopped land developer Phil Anderson’s housing development project. Over the next fifty years, over 60 mammoths (58 Columbian and three woolly) and 87 other late Ice Age species have been discovered, making The Mammoth Site the world’s largest mammoth research facility.

The Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, South Dakota celebrates fifty years of discovery with Mammoth Days, a two-day community event on Friday and Saturday, June 21 and 22, 2024. June 21 will be a Family Fun Night at The Mammoth Site from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Events include Bounce houses, Freewill BBQ, and Yard games.

The fun continues all day on June 22. Saturday’s events are bounce houses and food trucks from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Atlatl throwing competition, sponsored by Liv Hospitality, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. $5 entry fee, 9 a.m. ages 10-13 bracket, 11 a.m. ages 14-17 bracket, 1 p.m. ages 18+ bracket, Liv Hospitality Stay and Play packages awarded to the winner of each bracket.
