Fund goal for Custer firework display nearly reached

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - The fate of the Custer Fourth of July fireworks display was put into the hands of the community this year.

The display, which has been put on for the past 75 years, was creating a financial strain on the Custer Volunteer Fire Department, which usually supplies the event. In response, the Custer area Chamber of Commerce, along with more than 38 local businesses, have been raising money to keep this staple in the Custer community from disappearing.

So far, the group has raised $19,240 of their $25,000 goal.

“We’re really excited that we’re early in June and we’re so close to reaching our goal. It shows that our community really appreciates our fireworks, and I feel like we all know the value that they bring to our area,” Dawn Murray, the executive director of the Custer Chamber of Commerce said.

Murray says more than 10,000 people from all over the nation come to this event each year.
