Spirit of hip-hop is coming back to Rapid City for the month of June
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - A music festival that’s been going on for two years is bringing the spirit of hip-hop this weekend to Rapid City.
The growing event known as June Fest is on track to its third year in Rapid City, and the growth of the music event is evident.
It started in 2022 to promote hip-hop in the Black Hills and break the bad stigma behind the music.
The event is not only promoting that message but also reaching out and helping people get noticed if they are starting in the hip-hop scene.
Colton Pourier, who hails from Pine Ridge and got exposure from music festivals like June Fest, wants that to be one of the central messages this year for small artists performing.
“Just giving them opportunities that we felt like people didn’t usually that’s kind of where it started was just giving people like us, like other small artists in town, an opportunity to be on a stage have, you know, a voice, give them a chance to be out there and be exposed,” June Fest co-founder Colton Pourier said. “Me personally, I’m a Native American; I was born on Pine Ridge, and I have a lot of ties out there. Especially now with the music.”
While that message is for the artists, the message sent to the public is also one of positivity and growth.
“I hope that they see our growth from year one to year three, and I hope that everybody walks away this year seeing how big it has grown in the three years, and they realize that we have lots and lots of more years to go with this,” expressed June Fest co-founder Leo Arguello. “We want to give people our age and our community that come from the same similar backgrounds that we come from the outlet to kind of express themselves and the encouragement to be able to do that, and that’s what June Fest is about.”
The event will happen June 14 through June 15 at the Memorial Park Bandshell from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. If you want to learn more about the event, go to the June Fest Rapid City Facebook page.
