Rapid City sports tournaments expected to bring $9 million to local economy
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Rapid City is in for a sports frenzy this month.
The Rapid City Sports Commission brought in 10 different youth sports tournaments which are expected to bring in approximately $9 million for the local economy.
The organization anticipates roughly eight thousand athletes will be in town during the month along with their families and friends.
The sporting events include baseball, softball, and soccer tournaments. Featuring the BHR Scheels Rushmore Cup, Jim Scull Tournament and the Rushmore Shootout Baseball Tournament.
Sports Commission Executive Director Domico Rodriguez says bringing this many tournaments to town is perfect timing.
“It’s tourism season, there’s a lot of people in the community just in general, but an opportunity just to showcase our sports facilities. Athletes get to compete closer to home versus traveling so it’s just a good, it’s a win-win for the community, for the athletes, and for the local organizations that are helping putting these on,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez added these tournaments allow the city to showcase new or improved sporting facilities.
This includes Sioux Park which finished construction this past spring.
