RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Rapid City’s leaders are asking people to submit art as a way to update the city’s comprehensive plan.

“The City of Rapid City is currently in the process of updating its plans for the future. And as part of that, we want to hear from community members today. What is your story, living here in the community?” said Sarah Hanzel, planning projects division manager.

The comprehensive plan is a vision for the development of Rapid City that gets updated every 10 years, and this year Hanzel is making a focus of the project opening new avenues for people to provide feedback.

“What we’d really like to do is just encourage more participation in the process and open up the avenues that people can share that feedback,” she said. “And that’s why we’re looking for photos, stories, other ways of communicating.”

Any and all art forms are accepted, and a collection of submissions will be showcased at the Dahl Arts Center in August.

“They could be writing poems, painting pictures, just giving stories of their life and what they feel of Rapid City,” said City Councilmember Pat Roseland.

The city’s comprehensive plan was originally adopted in 2014 and has led to some of Rapid City’s most recognizable developments.

“We’ve been able to affect the way our city has grown. The Main Street Square project is one we worked on 10 years ago and that kind of changed downtown. So it’s projects like these, the comprehensive plan, that change the community,” said Eirik Heikes, Rapid City planning commissioner.

Submissions can be made in-person at the Dahl Arts Center or online at the Rapid Gets Creative website.
