RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is cracking down on mobile home residents who are still late paying their property taxes.

Civil Deputy Sheriff David Douma says last month they sent letters to mobile homeowners who still owed property taxes.

He says the sheriff’s office has reached a point where they will visit homes and sell them off if the taxes are more than a year delinquent.

When they reach that point, the office gives a two-day notice before selling the homes. Douma recommends people pay their taxes as soon as possible to avoid losing their homes and paying additional fees.

“It’s good, it’s always going to be the final ones that are going to be the most work. Sometimes, these homes are abandoned and they still have to be levied and we have to tip to sell them” Douma said.

In two months the number of at-risk homes decreased from 547 to 275.
