RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Pride month is kicked off every year in June to celebrate the power of the LGBTQ+ community and highlight their activism.

Jamie Geidd, Director of Community Relations and Renee Mcfarland, Community Outreach Coordinator for the Black Hills Center for Equality says they are excited because this year will mark the first-ever Pride Parade in the Black Hills on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. in Rapid City.

They are inviting the community to celebrate diversity and inclusion at the upcoming Pride Parade on June 1. Geidd and McFarland say it’s about positive vibes this weekend, and urge everyone to wear their pride colors if they want and support a community that values equality and love for all. McFarland says it’s about inclusivity this June and it starts with all of us so that everyone is welcome and feel free to participate. Geidd adds, we want all family, friends and attendees to know we accept you just as you are and we love you.

Geidd says you can line up anywhere downtown on Main Avenue and the parade will wrap around St. Joseph St., a normal parade route in Rapid City.

She wants everyone to feel connected and says if you need a mom hug or an auntie hug or you want to walk with us then come on down and join in. There are prizes for best float and best high school marching band, details are in the entry form below. McFarland mentions that they have not quite gotten any participating marching bands but are still looking to add them to the entertainment lineup. Canyon Lake United Methodist Church and Open Heart United Methodist Church are providing music entertainment through kazoo bands as well.
