RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Home designs today prove nothing truly goes out of style. One man in Black Hawk is turning heads with his approach to the oldest type of housing structure in the world.

According to Redfin, Earth homes have been around since at least 15,000 BCE. These homes are built into the Earth and provide increased protection from weather, solar radiation, and natural disasters.

After building an Earth Home in Rapid City years ago for a client, Leonard Geidel, owner of Geidel Construction is using his passion to finally build his own dream Earth Home.

“We have done one of these about 15 years ago east of town and ... um ... they said it was, without any heat in the house in the winter time it never got under 58 degrees, and with no air conditioning in the summer-time it got no more than 78 degrees, and so we just, being in the concrete construction we wanted a concrete home and we got it,” Geidel said.

Geidel says with the price of gas, electricity, and other utilities increasing, the efficiency of Earth homes will soon be recognized by even more homeowners.
