RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - 895 tons of waste were deposited at Rapid City’s landfill during community cleanup week in April. That’s equivalent to 224 4-ton elephants. Almost 3,000 cars passed across the landfill’s scale during the week, which is how the trash was measured.

”When you come across the scale, you’ve got a full load, so you weigh in, you dump it, and then you turn around and weigh out, explained Ria Hannon, Rapid City’s solid waste education and outreach coordinator. “So, we just get that difference, and that’s where we get our measurement.”

Hannon mentioned volunteers braved cold and windy weather to continue the cleanup, and people have told her their neighborhoods are looking much cleaner. Additionally, Rapid City’s Habitat for Humanity chapter claimed nearly 3,000 pounds of waste they hope to reuse or repurpose.
