BOX ELDER, S.D. (KEVN) - The city of Box Elder is growing in population annually at a 2.5% rate, according to the World Population Review.

The population increase can be attributed to more families moving to the area due to the presence of a military base. With a growing economy, more businesses are popping up in the city.

Almost Home Pet Resort reopened its doors on March 1 in Box Elder.

“We purchased it from another husband-and-wife couple who wound up having to close down over the summer,” Suzie Newsom, co-owner of Almost Home Pet Resort said. “We knew that we always wanted to do something like this, we just never knew how, when, or why it would happen, but it happened.”

Co-owner Shane and Suzie Newsom wanted to keep their business in Box Elder.

“Box Elder is getting bigger, there’s more people coming in here shortly with the new bombers coming in and we felt like it just had to stay here,” Suzie said.

“I retired to stay here, to stay in a local area, the school system, our house, and everything, this is just where we want to be,” Shane Newsom, co-owner of Almost Home Pet Resort, said.

Once the Newsom’s decided to open the facility they became certified in animal CPR and added additional training under their belts.

“We brought the old owners in and did a lot of training and stuff on how to keep it clean like they did,” Shane said. “We just keep doing what they were doing, and this is just a great job, we get to hang out with dogs all day long.”

Almost Home Pet Resort is a boarding facility for dogs and cats, but they also allow exotic animals to board.
