EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE/Gray News) - An Indiana family says their child is going home after spending nearly a week in the hospital following a near drowning.

On Friday, family and friends shared that 1-year-old Ayko was discharged from Norton’s Children’s Hospital in Kentucky.

“God is so good. Welcome home Ayko,” a family friend shared on a GoFundMe for the boy.

WFIE previously reported the 1-year-old was rushed to the hospital on May 3 after he fell into the family’s backyard pool.

The toddler’s parents, China and Alex, said their boy was strong while he continued to fight.

“Ayko is making positive progress. He is a very strong baby, and we know he isn’t going to stop fighting until he is back home with us. Please keep praying for our boy,” the parents previously shared in a statement.

On Tuesday, Ayko’s grandmother Cheyenne shared that Ayko had begun breathing on his own and was off medications for the first time since being hospitalized.

“Thank you, God, for our miracle!!” she wrote online.

The family thanked everyone for their support as the fundraiser has received over $22,000 in donations.

Friends said the boy’s parents are “truly the sweetest people and the absolute best parents.”

“Alex & China wanted me to share a huge thank you to all the first responders and medical staff that made this possible,” fundraiser organizer Colleen Watters said.

Authorities did not immediately share how the boy fell into the pool but said no foul play was suspected.
