RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Rapid City is one of sixteen communities in the country that is expected to receive a $100,000 grant to help underserved neighborhoods.

The city received approval to take part in the “Love Your Block” impact volunteering award program, which funds community-based volunteer initiatives that work to fix issues in local neighborhoods. The grant is all about helping a community in Rapid City that is underserved and suffers from high violent crime rates.

Jamie Kirsch, the project manager for the Rapid City Police Department, hopes this will be a long-term solution to problems in the community.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to see residents take a leadership role in their own neighborhood in shaping public safety goals and improvements to their own community. With that type of investment from neighborhood residents, we see a long-term sustainable reduction in violent crime and other issues,” said Kirsch.

People will have the opportunity to submit project ideas that will address problems in their neighborhoods. The grant is coming from Johns Hopkins, and the official announcement is expected Monday.
