Spearfish Forest Products announces layoffs in response to reduced forest service timber sale program
SPEARFISH, S.D. (KEVN) - Neiman Enterprise’s last South Dakota facility, Spearfish Forest Products, announced on Thursday, April 11, layoffs and production reduction.
Approximately 50 employees and their families are affected by the layoffs.
Neiman Enterprises says the layoffs are a direct result of reductions to the Black Hills National Forest timber sale program.
“We have done everything possible to prevent this unfortunate outcome that will impact these employees, our community, and ultimately the health of the forest,” expressed Jim Neiman, the company president.
Neiman Enterprises said they are helping the laid-off employees with support and assistance with job placement and resources.
“History has shown again and again that decisions like that to reduce the BHNF timber sale program, are dangerous and come with serious consequences,” stated the Executive Director of the Black Hills Forest Resource Association.
“The news of layoffs at Nieman Enterprises is sad, frustrating, and dangerous. We could have and should have done something during the legislative session to prop up the timber industry while the federal government delays timber sales,” said State Senator Helene Duhamel, reacting to the news.
