8-year-old died from fentanyl, not allergic reaction to strawberries, coroner says
HOPKINS CO., Ky. (WFIE/Gray News) – An 8-year-old boy’s death in Kentucky last month had nothing to do with the strawberries he ate from a school fundraiser, officials said.
On Wednesday, the Hopkins County Coroner said 8-year-old Trey Harris died from fentanyl intoxication.
He died on March 15.
His family told police that they believed he suffered an allergic reaction after eating strawberries the night before from a school fundraiser.
The Hopkins County Health Department prompted anyone who bought those strawberries to throw them away out of an abundance of caution while they investigated.
Health officials now say the FDA tested the strawberries and found there was nothing wrong with them.
Health officials said anyone who froze the strawberries can safely eat them.
Trey’s stepfather, 33-year-old Antonio Person, was arrested on March 26 for trafficking fentanyl and other drug and gun charges while police investigated Trey’s death.
Person has now been charged with manslaughter, according to jail records.
He remains in custody at Hopkins County Jail on a more than $1 million bond. He is expected in court on Friday.
