Family buys, rebuilds burned down 9,000-square-foot mansion
FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WTVF) – One step through the new front doors of a Tennessee home will present anyone with a lot to take in.
The Thakur family put plans into motion to rebuild a 9,000-square-foot mansion in Franklin a year ago after it burned down.
Mike Thakur said he and his family most likely would have wanted to renovate whichever house they chose to move into, so they decided to invest in one that had burned down and needed to be completely overhauled.
“We figured if we are going to do a little fixer-upper, what’s a little more? How hard can it be, right?” he said.
With the home complete, Thakur is now like a proud father showing off his new baby.
Beyond a dream kitchen, the mansion also offers three floors of luxurious living.
“I think it offers something for everybody,” Thakur said. “For a family with kiddos, we have four great bedrooms. We have the carriage house for guests so they don’t have to stay in the house. Got a fitness room, the movie room, got two offices, the wine room downstairs, as well as the oversized kitchen and the chef’s kitchen.”
With any renovation, of course, not everything went exactly as planned.
“The surprises were few and far between, but where we had them they were big ones,” Thakur said.
From an expansive driveway that collapsed to an entryway that needed more than one overhaul.
Thakur originally wanted to re-use the home’s ornate, handmade railings, but said they didn’t fit the style of the renovated house.
“I came in one night with my chainsaw, and we just chainsawed the thing off,” he said.
As the finishing touches take shape, the Thakur family seems more ready to start the process all over again than officially move in.
“Maybe this is the first Thakur home. Maybe there will be a few more down the road,” Thakur said. “I don’t know. We’ll see.”
