LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE/Gray News) – A trailer carrying seven thoroughbreds crashed into an embankment in Kentucky, leaving three of the horses dead and four of them seriously injured.

Bardstown police said the crash happened around 4:45 a.m. Monday near exit 25 on the Bluegrass Parkway.

A semitruck carrying the horses was headed east toward Lexington when the driver crossed over into the westbound lanes and crashed into the embankment of the overpass.

Three of the seven horses died at the scene, and the remaining four were taken to an animal hospital with serious injuries.

The three thoroughbreds that died were estimated to be around a $450,000 loss.

Police said the driver suffered serious cuts but is expected to be OK.
