NORTH KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV/Gray News) - A student and one other person were injured during a shooting outside a high school basketball game in North Kansas City.

KCTV reports the shooting occurred just after a basketball game between North Kansas City and Staley High School.

The school was placed on lockdown after the shots were fired.

In a press briefing, the North Kansas City Police Department later confirmed a juvenile and one adult were shot.

Police say the juvenile victim is a student of North Kansas City High School and sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Officials also said the adult victim has no affiliation with the school or school district. Both victims are currently listed in stable condition.

North Kansas City Police Investigations Sergeant Christopher Kimmel shared his frustration about what happened Saturday night.

“We want our youth to be able to come and enjoy a basketball game, and now we’re talking about lives that are altered for the worst. I’m sure it’s going to be senseless,” Kimmel said.

Police said the investigation is ongoing, and more information will be released as it becomes available.

The school district also released a statement:

“Northtown, Oak Park and Staley staff and families:

Unfortunately, we are writing to make you aware of an incident that occurred during this afternoon’s basketball games hosted at North Kansas City High School. Near the end of the Staley-NKCHS game, a shooting occurred outside the building on the east side. Police were already present in a security role and responded immediately. All guests inside were asked to stay indoors while law enforcement worked to resolve the issue safely.

At this point, 2-3 potential victims are being provided medical assistance. Those guests in attendance may leave. We do not have any further details to share, but can confirm that anyone involved has been contacted directly. We look forward to a full police investigation.”

According to KCTV, a speech and debate tournament was also held at the high school during the evening of the shooting. Students who participated in the debate event as well as the visiting basketball team were safe following the shooting.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas took to X Saturday night to share his frustration following yet another shooting in the Kansas City metro.

“Praying (again) after a metro area shooting. Thinking of those impacted and our young people. Wondering when we will do more to avoid these tragedies that keep breaking all our hearts and build a world where our kids our safe. I’m ready, parents are ready, our city is ready,” the mayor said.
