Thousands wake up without service after widespread AT&T outage
NEW YORK (Gray Media) - Thousands of people around the U.S. woke up Thursday without wireless service. A website that tracks outages showed a spike of more than 74 thousand outages across the country for AT&T customers. The carrier says they have since restored service for 75 percent of the people experiencing outages. The outages began in the early morning hours and continued throughout the day.
“Some of our customers are experiencing wireless service interruptions this morning. Our network teams took immediate action and so far three-quarters of our network has been restored. We are working as quickly as possible to restore service to remaining customers,” said the carrier in their most recent update.
With 240 million subscribers, AT&T is the largest carrier in the nation. A representative for the company could only update on restoration efforts throughout the day but did not say what caused the outage.
There were reports that other carriers like Verizon and T-Mobile also had outages. Both companies maintain they never lost service and any problems may have stemmed from their customers trying to contact people who had service outages.
