RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Looking to make a fresh start in a new career? The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office has positions open you may not have thought about.

Positions open include correctional officers, detox technicians, EMTs, and inmate security officers. All of these roles have positions open but one that they have a greater need for is correctional officers. Both the adult and juvenile facilities have positions open that they are looking to fill as soon as possible.

Chief Deputy Mark Hughes says some added benefits of working in corrections are that you get to work indoors away from any potential bad weather and these jobs can be the start of a larger career.

”One of the things that is a benefit in the CO field is we can get you into an inmate security officer at age 19 there’s no degree required and at age 20 we can transfer you over to a correctional officer and a lot of our people have had lengthy careers in the correctional officer field,” said Hughes.

Hughes says the office prefers to promote from within if they can, making entry-level positions more enticing for those looking for a long-term career.
