RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Every Feb. 2, a chosen celebrity groundhog emerges from hibernation and predicts with his shadow if we will have six more weeks of winter, or an early spring. This tradition can be dated back to 1887, according to history.com.

Although the original Punxsutawney Phil lives in Pennsylvania, the newsroom has our own Phil. We took him outside from his nice warm office, to see if he will see his own shadow.

“But what this weather did not provide is a shadow or a reason to hide! Glad tidings on this Groundhog Day- an early spring is on the way,” said Dan McGinley, vice president, Moonshine.

According to weather.gov, Punxsutawney Phil is correct 40 percent of the time with his predictions.

Happy Groundhog Day!
