RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - We are going to stay safe with a nice, smooth, and sweet after-dinner drink.

No tamarind fruit, no Turkish tobacco bitters, and no bacon-infused bourbon. These, plus a couple more I didn’t mention, are all attempts that failed. That is expected when you experiment and we celebrate those failures as much as we celebrate the successes. Remember, those great bar drinks took time to perfect.

Today we go with a Mudslide. It supposedly was first concocted on the Grand Cayman Island in the 1970s, kind of a beefed-up White Russian.

There are dozens of recipes for the Mudslide. The Baileys recipe calls for ice and a blender, others include ice cream and are served in massive glasses. We are going to stay with the original.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz vodka (sweeter, use vanilla vodka; or maybe substitute with brandy)
  • 1 oz coffee liqueur
  • 1 oz Baileys Irish Cream
  • 1 1/2 oz heavy cream (remember, heavy)
  • Chocolate syrup (optional)
  • Shaved chocolate for garnish

In a shaker with ice, add the vodka, coffee liqueur, Irish cream, and heavy cream; shake to chill and strain into a coupe, rocks, or martini glass. Shave some chocolate over the top. You can also use chocolate syrup and drizzle it around the inside of the glass just before pouring the drink into it.
