RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - On Friday, the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo will kick off with the PRCA Xtreme Bulls finishing off the night, but before that happens, there’s still work to be done at The Monument.

Last week, dirt was laid in The Summit Arena, and crews have been hard at work getting the rest of The Monument ready. But the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo doesn’t start and end in the Summit,

“So since Saturday night after hockey was over, we’ve been going pretty good in the ice arena. Rushmore Hall also got done last night. The fairgrounds is moving in there currently,” said Nathan Kleinschmit, operations manager at The Monument. “Barnett arena will be tomorrow, which is Tuesday, they’ll start moving in there, the fairgrounds, and then followed in by Suttons will finish, finish that part.”

While The Monument finishes getting set up, some events have started at the James Kjerstad Event Center

“Out at the James Kjerstad Event Center we’ve got a number of the pre-Black Hills Stock Show events taking place with the American Quarter Horse Association. They’ve got several different classes that run now, through Thursday evening, and it’s one of the largest turnouts that we’ve ever had for this year’s show,” stated Ron Jeffries, general manager of the Central States Fair, and Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo.

There are high expectations for this years show with the last two year’s seeing record turnouts.

“You know last year was a record turnout, as was the year before that,” continued Jeffries. “We keep thinking that some year things are going to stumble a little, but, you know really the weather, looking last week, was pretty rough, now we turn the corner we got wonderful weather. Cattle prices are still holding pretty well. We had a lot of hay this summer from the rain. I think were going to have an awesome show. If the AQHA shows are any indication, well set another record here at this years show.”
