Veterinarian walks through miles of snow to perform lifesaving surgery on cat

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC/Gray News) - A veterinarian in Alabama walked miles to work through the snow to take care of a sick cat brought to the clinic.

Blueberry, a 5-year-old cat, was brought to the Caldwell Mill Animal Clinic in Birmingham last week after her owners began noticing she wasn’t feeling well.

She stayed over the weekend and, on Monday, veterinarian Dr. Nicole Martin said they still couldn’t determine what was wrong.

On Tuesday morning, things took a turn for the worse.

“Two of our most wonderful technicians got here through the snow and were able to look at her and called me and said something’s not right with Blueberry. They took X-rays which clearly showed there was something stuck in there,” Martin said.

Martin said she knew she had to come in but didn’t know how with frigid temperatures and icy roadways.

“There was no other option other than to walk,” Martin said.

Martin talked with the other veterinarians and technicians and since she was the closest she started on the three-mile walk from her neighborhood.

It was a cold and bitter hike, but Martin said all she could think about was saving Blueberry’s life.

“We’ve been with her for days at this point, realizing how much we loved her and, once we saw the X-rays of what was making her sick, it was just in time we all got together to help save her life,” Martin said.
