TEMPE, Ariz. (KPHO/Gray News) - When a dog decided to make a daring escape from his kennel for a midnight snack at an Arizona animal shelter, a police officer had to intervene.

A husky named King yearned to be free and fill his tummy while at Lost Our Home Pet Rescue in Tempe. Video cameras captured him getting out of his kennel around midnight last November by opening the door with his paw. He walked out to the office but not before trying to free some of his friends, KPHO reports.

“There are other dogs in the same room as him, and he kept trying to open up their kennels, too,” said Jodi Polanski, the pet rescue’s founder and executive director. “He really wanted to party with some friends.”

King then made his way to the lobby with one goal in mind: a midnight snack. He knocked over a container full of food, spilling it across the floor, and chowed down.

“This dog is so smart,” Polanski said. “He definitely ruled the place, didn’t he?”

Polanski was woken up when King triggered the building’s security system, which sent an alert to her phone.

“My reaction was just definitely surprised,” she said. “It said a glass broke from inside, and I said, ‘How is that possible?’... It went off like three times, and I couldn’t figure out what was going on.”

Security cameras caught a Husky named King also trying to open other kennels before a police officer showed up.

At that point, Polanski called police to quickly check on the building, as she continued watching security cameras from home.

“Turns out, because he was jumping up on the door, that’s why it was saying ‘glass break,’” she said.

An officer soon arrived and put King back where he belonged. He also decided to help clean the place after noticing the dog had left a mess.

Polanski tried to get in touch with the officer and thank him personally, but he wanted to stay out of the limelight.

“We’re just calling him ‘Mr. Clean,’” she chuckled.

Polanski says she hasn’t experienced something like this before. It’s now a memorable story for her, the officer who helped and the animal rescue for years to come.

King was adopted after the incident happened.
