Experts warn of voter scams as election approaches
(InvestigateTV) — Secretaries of State nationwide are warning of scams targeting voters as the election rapidly approaches.
“Well, unfortunately, I think we’re seeing it pick up,” Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson said.
Sec. Watson said they’re noticing different forms of election-related schemes, from political donation scams to fake surveys and polls, as well as fake voter registration.
“Folks, will, you know, try to send the mail and say ‘if you’ll pay me, then I’ll get your registration certificate.’ Well, you can do that for free online,” Watson said. “And it’s disturbing that people would take advantage of folks that are really trying to just exercise their rights.”
Sec. Watson recommended reaching out to local election officials in your city, county or state if you’re concerned about an imposter.
“So, just take your time again. This is a great example of hey, call the secretary of state’s office and say ‘who exactly is running this campaign? Can you put me in touch with the actual campaign itself?’ We try to stay out of politics, but when people have questions like that to make sure again the money is not being taken advantage of and they aren’t being ripped off,” Watson said.
He added that if you think you were scammed after making a donation or sharing your financial information, contact your bank or financial institution to close or change any compromised accounts.
