ABILENE, Texas (Gray News) – A baby giraffe from the Abilene Zoo died last week after suffering a severe leg fracture for unknown reasons.

“It is with deep sadness that the Abilene Zoo announces the devastating loss of our beloved baby giraffe, Zahara,” the zoo said in a statement. “The cause of the injury is undetermined.”

The zoo said that Zahara died while staff were in the process of providing emergency care “despite the strong efforts of our medical team.”

Zahara was the newest member of the zoo’s giraffe herd. She was born July 20 to parents Malaika and Congo.

The zoo said she was a precious member of their giraffe herd with her playful and spirited personality.

“We are devastated by this tragic loss,” said Robert Trejo, General Curator. “Zahara brought immense joy to our zoo family and the community.”
