8-year-old girl dies after being hit by school bus

MADISON, Miss. (WLBT/Gray News) - An 8-year-old girl died after being hit by a school bus Wednesday afternoon in Madison, Mississippi.

The girl, identified as Jeanelle Fredericks, was struck Wednesday at about 4:20 p.m. and later died from her injuries.

According to the Madison Police Department, first responders arrived at the scene and “immediately began providing medical assistance” to the girl.

She was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center by ambulance.

WLBT reporters say they saw a bike under the back of the bus. Children getting off the bus said, “She was under the bus.”

Madison County Schools sent their condolences to the child’s family and friends.

In the same public statement, they announced that beginning Thursday, additional counselors will be on hand providing support for students and staff at Madison Avenue Upper Elementary and Madison Avenue Elementary.

“We encourage parents to reach out to the counselor’s office at their child’s school for additional resources or support in helping their children through this difficult time,” the school district said.

The children who were on the school bus were reunited with their parents.
