DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG/Gray News) - A police officer in Iowa who was shot in the head last week is now out of the hospital.

Des Moines Police Officers Cade Moritz and Jacob Boekhoff were attempting to pull over a vehicle on Sept. 16, but the driver sped off before crashing about a block away from the start of the traffic stop.

Authorities said the driver, later identified as 37-year-old Joshua Green, then pulled out a gun and shot at the officers.

Moritz was hit in the head and Boekhoff was hit in the arm.

Other responding officers fired back at Green, killing him.

On Tuesday, the Des Moines Police Department shared photos of Moritz walking out of the hospital.

Boekhoff also joined Moritz as they left the hospital surrounded by family and friends.

The police department said it was a huge step forward in the officers’ recovery.

Moritz will be moving to a rehabilitation program.
