GREENVILLE, S.C. (WHNS/Gray News) - A high school student has died and another was seriously hurt in South Carolina after the two were involved in a crash on their way to pick up their child.

According to the Anderson County Coroner’s Office, the students were from Belton-Honea Path High School and had just left campus on Tuesday morning when a large bird landed in front of their car on Clamp Drive.

South Carolina Highway Patrol said the two high schoolers ended up driving off the road due to the bird when the driver overcorrected, and they hit a tree.

The passenger has been identified as 17-year-old Abbigail “Grace” Callaham. She was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, Thomas Kennedy, was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

Callaham was a junior with Kennedy being a senior at Belton-Honea Path High.

The coroner’s office said they were heading to a day care to pick up their 4-month-old child when the crash occurred.

Authorities said the collision remains under investigation.
