Couple following GPS drives off boat ramp

ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCSC/Gray News) - An out-of-town couple drove off a boat ramp in Isle of Palms, South Carolina, after getting turned around by their GPS.

A couple, in their 60s, drove off a boat ramp into Morgan Creek Saturday night, according to the Isle of Palms Police Department. Police said they got confused while following directions off of GPS.

Johnny Himmelsback, an employee at Islander 71 Fish House and Raw Bar, noticed the car windows were down and he dove into the creek to rescue the couple.

Himmelsback and other employees helped get the couple out of the water. They were not injured, according to Sgt. Matthew Storen.

The victims’ names have not yet been identified.

The car has been removed from the water and the boat ramp has since been cleared.

The Coast Guard confirmed there were no environmental impacts from this incident.

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Isle of Palms Fire Department responded to the incident.
