1 person shot at high school in Omaha; suspect in custody, police say

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT/Gray News) - One person was hospitalized after a shooting at a high school in Omaha, Nebraska.

Police responded to a shooting at Omaha Northwest High School on Tuesday at about 12:30 p.m.

Omaha Police Deputy Chief Sherie Thomas said that a 15-year-old victim was found inside the school. They were reportedly critically injured in the shooting and rushed to the hospital.

The suspect, who is also believed to be a student, was taken into custody at 12:58 p.m.

Thomas said the shooting was an isolated incident between the two students.

Omaha Public Schools went into lockdown at 12:30 p.m.; that lockdown was lifted at 1:30 p.m.

Students were released room by room and sent to the west side near the football stadium.

Police said the scene — including neighborhoods around the school — is secure.

Police helicopter was seen circling the area, and crime-scene tape was put up on the campus.

“We are saddened and angered about the shooting at Omaha Northwest High School and pray for the student’s recovery,” Nebraska Congressman Don Bacon said in a statement.
