12-year-old hit by truck on Father’s Day heads home after 76 days in hospital
SLIDELL, La. (WVUE/Gray News) - A 12-year-old from Slidell, Louisiana who was struck by a truck on Father’s Day, has taken a major step in his recovery.
On Friday, Aug. 30, after 76 days in the hospital, Grayson Manning walked out unassisted, ready to return home.
Manning’s family shared the emotional milestone on social media.
“Day 76: Grayson Manning walked out of the hospital and is heading home!! #fightlikegrayson,” Mindy McConnell wrote.
Grayson’s dad Dustin Manning reflected on his son’s journey, recalling the early days in the ICU.
“I remember day 2 or 3 in the ICU, before he woke up telling him in his ear it’s going to be the biggest fight he has ever had in his life, and so far he is kicking [it]!!” he wrote. “Still a long road to go, but soon he will be out on the paintball field.”
Since the accident, Grayson has undergone multiple surgeries to address brain swelling, facial and skull injuries, and to preserve the function in his eye. He was also fitted with a Halo device to stabilize his neck and head movements.
By early July, he had been moved out of the ICU and was breathing on his own.
On July 21, Grayson had a heartwarming reunion with his dog, Muffin, during a hospital visit. His mother shared that he had been eagerly asking to see Muffin, and the family enjoyed a walk around the hospital, even having lunch outside.
Now, after months of treatment and rehabilitation, Grayson will be back home with his family.
