MARSEILLES, Ill. (WEEK/Gray News) – A 7-year-old girl survived a boating accident Sunday on an eastern Illinois lake that killed her grandfather and great-grandfather.

The girl was wearing a life jacket when the boat capsized, but the two Indiana men were not, according to Illinois Conservation Police.

The three had been on a fishing trip at the LaSalle Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area at the 2,000-acre lake near Marseilles.

Conservation Police said they were called just after noon on Sunday when they saw a capsized 17-foot Crestliner.

The girl was on the shore with park visitors who came to her aid and helped contact her mother and grandmother.

Police said the men were recovered around 7:45 p.m. The LaSalle County coroner pronounced them dead at the scene.

The grandfather was 53 and from Merrillville, Indiana. The great-grandfather was 80 and from Gary, Indiana. Their names have not been released.
