Trump hush money judge won’t step aside
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - The Judge in Donald Trump’s hush money case is refusing to step aside after another request from the former president’s defense team. The latest in a string of efforts from Donald Trump and his defense team to get Merchan to recuse himself was slammed down for being rife with inaccuracies and unsubstantiated claims.
The Trump team’s latest request came on the basis that Merchan’s daughter works as a Democratic political consultant, and in the past worked for Vice President Kamala Harris,Trump’s new chief political opponent.
Merchan rejected the accusation he cannot be impartial and will remain in charge of sentencing Trump set for September 18th. The trial concluded months ago with 34 felony convictions for falsifying business records, but as Trump awaits sentencing, he wants Merchan out.
Sentencing is slated to happen two days after Merchan makes a ruling on the question of Trump’s presidential immunity. The Trump team argues the case should be thrown out after the Supreme Court ruled presidents are immune from prosecution for official acts while in office, potentially including some acts at the heart of the hush money case.
