GOODYEAR, Ariz. (KPHO/Gray News) - An Arizona city has lost its specially trained tactical unit, commonly known as the SWAT team, due to an ongoing dispute when it comes to compensation.

City of Goodyear officials confirmed on Friday that the Goodyear Police Department’s Special Assignment Unit collectively submitted a letter of resignation this week.

“We respect our employees’ right to express their grievances and are dedicated to finding a resolution that honors both their rights and our commitment to the community,” a spokesperson for the city said. “Department leadership is actively working with the affected employees to address their concerns.”

According to city officials, the resignations impact the officers’ service on the SAU team, while all others will continue their regular full-time duties with the department.

Goodyear officials stressed that the circumstances don’t pose any new or additional risk to the community.

“The SWAT team responds to the incidents that go beyond the typical capabilities of patrol. We’re dealing with the most serious of offenders and the most serious crimes,” Goodyear Deputy Police Chief David Farrow previously explained.

A Goodyear spokesperson says a total of 17 officers were assigned to the department’s SAU team.

City officials said negotiating remains ongoing with the union.

Until a deal is reached, the city of Goodyear will rely on mutual aid agreements with other cities including Buckeye, Surprise and Glendale if a situation arises to the need of a SWAT team.

“We have taken steps to ensure our community continues to receive the high standard of service they are accustomed to. Officers of the Goodyear Police Department work tirelessly to ensure that our community feels safe in their homes and businesses,” a spokesperson for the city shared.
